Essex students perform at historic VE Day 80th Anniversary Celebration on BBC One
The 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day was commemorated with a magnificent concert on Friday 8th May on BBC One and iPlayer. The special event took place at London’s historic Horse Guards Parade, hosted by television legend Zoe Ball. The opening performance, I Got Rhythm performed by Fleur East, featured a number of talented students from our Essex campus.
The piece featured cast members from iconic show Strictly Come Dancing – Amy Dowden, Carlos Gu, Karen Hauer, Neil Jones, Lauren Oakley, and Kai Widdrington. Students from our Essex campus joined them for the performance, choreographed by Performers College Alumnus Mark Jennings.
Georgia Mallaburn, a Level 6 BA (Hons) Musical Theatre and Dance student said:
“Getting the opportunity to perform at the VE Day Celebrations was an absolute privilege, performing in front of thousands of people and the King! I was able to work with and learn from choreographers and dancers within the industry and see how it is possible to live out my dreams. I was able to take all of my training from Performers College and put it into a professional rehearsal space and work environment. Definitely an experience I will forever remember.”
Essex Campus Dean, Emma Rogers, added:
“It was an incredible opportunity for the group of students from the Essex campus to be included and perform in this monumental concert live on tv. To work alongside professional performers including alumni of the Essex campus Mason Boyce and soak up the experience is something we hope to offer our students whilst training with us but this was an incredibly special opportunity facilitated by the brilliant team at the BBC and alumni of Performers College, Mark Jennings who was both the choreographer and creative director for the whole concert.
Watching live at home I was extremely proud of all involved and hope that further opportunities will be offered to our training professionals in the future.”
