Birmingham Campus celebrates first ever Level 5 ‘Acting for Stage’ module plays

8 February, 2024

Last month, students at our Birmingham campus studying BA (Hons) Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media performed their Level 5 plays, The Love of the Nightingale, and The Sweet Science of Bruising. As the course debuted in Birmingham in 2022, this is the campus’ first Level 5 class to undertake these performances.

Alan Magor, Associate Lecturer in Acting, who directed four casts of students (two for each play), comments on the subject matter of the pieces:

“The Love of the Nightingale is a play which has stood the test of time. Despite turning 35 years old in 2024, its themes, sadly, still resonate in today’s society. Our second-year students are part of a generation who are very switched on in their empathy levelsand aware of this play’s relevance – and it’s something many of them speak so passionately about. That is something which, I believe, makes them the most powerful and articulate candidates: they are able to find the nuance and detail of this play and tell its story.

The Sweet Science of Bruising is one of the most unique opportunities any creative person gets to be a part of. How many plays have been written about female boxers, let alone female boxers in the Victorian era? That being said, its themes  are, sadly, still relevant today. Over 100 years after the play is set, and after the women the characters are based on have passed, we are still fighting for some of the rights these women were fighting for during their lifetime.”

BA (Hons) Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media course leader Lilly Cadwallader had this to say about the performances:

“I’d like to congratulate the students for their first production, and our first ever public performance for the BA Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media Degree. This is a part of history!

These plays are a testament to the hard work of our students, our director Alan Magor, and our production team. We really hope you enjoyed the plays and the wonderful performances.”

A well-deserved congratulations to all the students who performed. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
