Birmingham and Essex celebrate successful summer productions
June saw our annual summer productions take place for our BA Musical Theatre and Dance & Trinity College Diploma in Musical Theatre and Dance students on both our Birmingham and Essex campuses.
The Essex show, Rush, took place across multiple cast performances at the Towngate Theatre, Basildon from 26th -29th June. The Birmingham show, Reverb, was performed at The Crescent Theatre on 4th and 5thJuly.
Watch our mini-documentary about the summer productions below:
The shows were both revue shows, collecting individual numbers showcasing the talent across first and second year degree students, and Trinity diploma students from all three years. The summer show is an optional extra show, taking place in addition to our usual programme of graduate performances that all third years undertake in their final year.
Head of Productions Dougie Mills explained the reasoning behind the extra production and how it benefits the students:
“We are committed to offering our training professionals as many high-quality, industry-mirrored performance opportunities as possible. These experiences are essential in helping students transition confidently into professional environments.
With formal teaching concluding in May, this extended five-week period allows students who wish to participate the chance to engage in further training and rehearsal. The process culminates in a professionally structured production setting — giving them a real-world context in which to apply their skills.
What makes this opportunity even more valuable is the non-assessed nature of the performances. By removing the pressure of formal evaluation, students can focus purely on building their performance craft, developing stage confidence, and exploring their own artistic identity. This relaxed but purposeful environment enables them to strengthen personal skill sets and grow as creative individuals.
In an industry where experience is everything, this additional project time is an invaluable extension of their training. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them take ownership of the work, thrive within a company dynamic, and bring each production to life with professionalism and passion.”
BA Musical Theatre and Dance Student Maya reflected on the opportunity:
“I loved every minute of the summer show. It allowed me the privilege of learning from internal and external creatives I admire, whilst working in a beautiful theatre with an incredible crew. Simply the best opportunity and the best time!”
Congratulations to everyone who performed and thanks to all of the creative professionals involved for a great run.
