Develop Your Ideas and Individual Style Choreography and Creative Direction
Our Choreography and Creative Direction course provides you with intensive vocational training and mentoring in the field of choreography for the contemporary, commercial and musical theatre industries.
You will work with industry specialists to learn about the key principles and practices of choreography and creative direction, including how to run a rehearsal room and prepare for a variety of projects. The course includes work experience on a public production and culminates in the production of a choreography showreel.
This course is suitable for people with previous dance training in any style, who would like to explore their choreographic skills.
Why take the course?
On the Choreography and Creative Direction course, you will work with a wide variety of choreographers from the dance industry, who will mentor you and provide guidance on your choreographic ideas and style. You will assist a professional choreographer in a rehearsal room, and create your own piece of choreography for a public audience. During the course, you will meet industry contacts who will guide you in pursuing a career in choreography and creative direction.

The body as a vehicle for expression
You will explore fundamental skills in the craft of choreography and the process of creating a dance piece.
Dynamics, energy and movement qualities
Through a variety of practical sessions, you will be encouraged to development a unique approach to your work, and identity of individual choreographic language.
Time, rhythm and phrasing
You will break down the “building blocks” of choreography, and how to use rhythm and phrasing to your advantage. You will also study how to communicate efficiently and clearly to a group of dancers you are choreographing.
Style and genre
You will undertake classes with expert teachers in a range of styles, including Classical Ballet, Tap, Technical Jazz, Musical Theatre Jazz, Hip-Hop/Commercial, and Contemporary Fusion/Lyrical. You will then specialise in a style that you wish to focus on for your own choreographic pieces. During the course, there will be a workshop on dance for screen and film, where you will be introduced to the specific requirements of choreographing for this medium.
Narrative through dance
You will practically explore the conveyance of a theme or narrative through dance, and how to engage an audience with a story that is told purely through physical expression.
Developing a working relationship with dancers
As part of the course, you will work with Performers College degree students who are training in professional dance. Working as an assistant to a professional choreographer, you will teach choreography and lead rehearsals. Key skills focused on will include leading the rehearsal room, time management, developing sensitivity and trust with dancers, communicating style, and delivering to a brief.
Careers Guidance
Towards the end of the course, there will be the opportunity for a Q&A with an industry professional, where you can gather tips and advice to help you develop your career within the industry.

Entry requirements
Minimum Age: 18 at the start of the course.
This course is open enrolment and there are no entry requirements.
In order to get the most out of the course, you should be able to both speak and write in English to a reasonable standard.
Please be aware that we have a limited number of places available for each course intake and operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
