Screen acting techniques for TV and Film

These sessions start your journey in developing the key skills required for performing for screen. You will discover the core screen actor’s artistic tools: voice, body, imagination and creative interpretation. Throughout these classes you will be taken through a process of creating, developing and delivering a partnered scene for camera, building an understanding of technical language that may be used on set whilst filming.

Text

Text classes will focus on how an actor brings a writer’s work to life to tell an engaging story for an audience whether on stage or screen. You will analyse scripts, using a variety of methodologies to deeply understand, interpret and create characters with depth and detail.

Acting Technique

Technique classes allow you to work with a range of scripts, exploring some of the foundational methodologies to turn instinct into craft. You will end these classes with a rehearsed reading of a monologue, chosen in collaboration with your lecturer as a mock audition with feedback.

Voice

You will be introduced to voice work and will cover both practical and theoretical components. You will discover how embodied voice work is integrated into spoken text. Core elements of breath and resonance will be introduced.

Improvisation

Improvisation classes will be explorational, varied, and will incorporate elements from different acting practitioners. The essential building blocks of improvisation will be introduced and developed during the course, encouraging you to work flexibly, spontaneously and with a range of stimuli.

Movement for Actors

The movement element of this course begins with a focus on physical release techniques alongside body-based improvisations. This practical workshop will focus you on your understanding of your body as a tool for expression and offer techniques that allow you to release physical tension, and experience being open to your own impulses within improvisatory work. Laban’s efforts will also be explored, and the focus will be on developing flexibility within your physicality to help you with playing a range of characters.
