Nathan Crossan-Smith
Associate Lecturer - Directing
Nathan is a director and practitioner from Manchester. Additionally, he serves as Co-Director of Hydrocracker and works as a Trustee for Graeae. Furthermore, he was Runner Up for the 2021 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award.
His directing work includes WHO CARES 2032 (Royal & Derngate, Northampton), The Trials (Storyhouse), and Bitch Boxer (Institute for Contemporary Theatre). Moreover, he directed The Voyage Out- a dance theatre piece after Virginia Woolf (Northern School of Contemporary Dance Research Commission). Other productions include Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (Orange Tree) and Richard II by William Shakespeare (LAMDA).
As an associate director, Nathan has worked on Operation Black Antler (Dir. Matt Adams, Blast Theory & Hydrocracker, Southbank Centre). Additionally, he was associate director for Strangers on a Train Set (Dir. Laurence Till, Lipservice National Tour).
His film work includes MISH + GRAHAM by Thea Gajic and Rebecca Saffir (Hydrocracker) and Before the Flame Goes Out by Raymond Antrobus (Hydrocracker). Furthermore, he worked as Second AD on Bloodymided (Blast Theory, 14-18 NOW) and as Floor Manager on A Place Free Of Judgement (Blast Theory).
Nathan works extensively with young people and community groups through his youth justice project tipping point. Moreover, he creates collaborative projects with major organizations including National Theatre, Barbican, National Youth Theatre, and National Theatre Wales. Additionally, he has worked with 20 Stories High, The Yard, Contact, Gate Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Young Vic, Synergy, Kids Company, Royal Court, and London Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a Deutsche Bank Award Winner, Nathan was Runner Up for the 2017 JMK Award. Subsequently, he became a Finalist for the 2018 Genesis Award at the Young Vic. His training includes LAMDA's postgraduate directing course and the National Theatre Directors Course.
