Matthew Lotter
Associate Lecturer in Acting
Matthew Lotter is an actor, playwright, director, and arts educator. Matthew holds an MA in Theatre and Performance (Cum Laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Additionally, he earned an Honours degree in Drama from the University of Pretoria (Cum Laude).
As a performer, his credits include touring The Sound of Music across Manila, Singapore, Macau, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The production was directed by Frank Thompson. Furthermore, he appeared in Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap during New Zealand and South African tours under Jonathan Tafler's direction. This performance earned him critical acclaim and a Naledi Theatre Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Other notable stage performances include Crepuscule by Dom Gumede, Alan Bennett's The History Boys, and Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution.
On screen, his work includes roles in Blood Drive (SyFy), Hammarskjöld, and Invasion (Apple TV+). Additionally, he hosted the youth programme The Rat Race.
As a director and writer, Matthew notably led the Walking Tall educational programme for PAST (Palaeontological Scientific Trust). This innovative project merged physical theatre with science education. Consequently, it won the BASA Development Award in 2018 and the SciFest Africa Award for Best Outreach Programme in 2019.
His teaching spans Acting Technique, Acting for Screen, Devising, Community Theatre, Directing and Movement. His approach is grounded in research on ideology and representation. Therefore, he champions dialogue between theatrical traditions and contemporary practice. His work remains rooted in community engagement, critical inquiry, and nurturing bold, reflective storytelling.
