Year 1

All students take the following core modules in their first year of study. Full module detail is subject to final approval.

Explore a range of movement creation methods, across varying styles and settings. You’ll apply these to your own choreography, with a focus on experimentation and innovation in movement creation. You will devise a small piece of output, with the support and input from an established choreographer through 1-2-1 meetings.

Previous Module Workshops Include:

  • Choreographic Approaches with Adam Murray
  • Devising Stage Movement with Carrie-Anne Ingrouille
  • Source Material with Paul Saunders

Work with dancers, musicians, composers, and designers to produce collaborative performances. This module emphasises the process of creating cohesive works across disciplines, from initial concept to final performance. You will collaborate with an industry stakeholder, within a specifically designed project, evidencing your process from your initial spark to the final realisation.

Previous Module Collaborations Include:

  • Musical Theatre Choreography with Amy Thornton
  • Contemporary & Tap Fusion with Chris Sparkes
  • Live vs Screen Commercial Choreography with Josie Pocock

Learn how technology, such as light design, projection and camera movement, can expand the possibilities of your choreography. You will be trained to integrate tech into your choreography, creating works that live the raw studio environment.

Previous Module Projects Include:

  • ‘One Shot’ Choreography Adoption
  • Integrating Light & Sound with Movement
  • Dance Film Production

Learn the skills to market yourself as a choreographer, from choreographing a series of shows for corporate businesses, to securing commissions and grants. This module helps you navigate the performing arts industry as an independent choreographer or leader of a dance company.

Previous Module Projects Include:

  • Company Creation & Artistic Identity
  • Dance Captain Leadership
  • ‘Pay What You Can’ Dance School Business Plan

Develop a full-length choreographic work to be performed in front of a live audience, or at a screening event. Under 1-2-1 mentorship with an industry choreographer, you will refine your choreography, collaborate with a production team, and stage a professional performance that showcases your artistic vision.

Previous choreographic works have included outputs such as hip-hop dance films, stylistic fusion documentaries and live musical theatre choreography. The bespoke facilities provide a blank canvas to fulfil your choreographic ambition, and support you to establish your creative identity.
