MA Choreography
Our MA Choreography is a specialised postgraduate course for movement artists ready to push creative boundaries, find their artistic voice, and explore new possibilities within the professional dance industry. This intensive course combines creative freedom with rigorous technical training, enabling you to develop your unique choreographic vision through extensive practice and research.
Working in spectacular performance spaces with mentorship from leading choreographers, you’ll master technical choreography skills whilst developing genre awareness and exploring digital tools and contemporary performance techniques. The programme emphasises cross-disciplinary collaboration to enhance artistic innovation, bringing together dancers, musicians, visual artists, and technologists to create groundbreaking work.
Throughout the course, you’ll present your choreographic works to public, private, and industry audiences, building your professional portfolio whilst receiving invaluable feedback from established professionals. The course brings the industry directly to you through networking opportunities, agent meetings, and tailored career advice sessions. You’ll create a professional showreel and develop the business acumen essential for today’s dance industry.

Minimum Requirements
A degree (normally 2.2 or above) in a creative industry-related subject or significant experience in a relevant field. Overseas students where English is not their native language may be required to meet a minimum English language requirement of an Academic IELTS 6.5. We require a minimum of 6.0 to be achieved in each band.
All applicants will be subject to interview and a portfolio may also be requested for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPCEL).
If you meet certain criteria, you may be eligible for a contextual offer with reduced entry requirements.
Progression

With access to state-of-the-art venues and performance environments, you’ll develop the skills to present work across diverse platforms, from intimate studio settings to major public showcases, transforming your artistic vision into compelling choreographic experiences.
Year 1
All students take the following core modules in their first year of study. Full module detail is subject to final approval.
Explore a range of movement creation methods, across varying styles and settings. You’ll apply these to your own choreography, with a focus on experimentation and innovation in movement creation. You will devise a small piece of output, with the support and input from an established choreographer through 1-2-1 meetings.

Core module (30 credits) in the Autumn Trimester
Work with dancers, musicians, composers, and designers to produce collaborative performances. This module emphasises the process of creating cohesive works across disciplines, from initial concept to final performance. You will collaborate with an industry stakeholder, within a specifically designed project, evidencing your process from your initial spark to the final realisation.

Core module (30 credits) in the Autumn Trimester
Learn how technology, such as light design, projection and camera movement, can expand the possibilities of your choreography. You will be trained to integrate tech into your choreography, creating works that live the raw studio environment.

Core module (30 credits) in the Spring Trimester
Learn the skills to market yourself as a choreographer, from choreographing a series of shows for corporate businesses, to securing commissions and grants. This module helps you navigate the performing arts industry as an independent choreographer or leader of a dance company.

– ‘Pay What You Can’ Dance School Business Plan
Core module (30 credits) in the Spring Trimester
Develop a full-length choreographic work to be performed in front of a live audience, or at a screening event. Under 1-2-1 mentorship with an industry choreographer, you will refine your choreography, collaborate with a production team, and stage a professional performance that showcases your artistic vision.
Previous choreographic works have included outputs such as hip-hop dance films, stylistic fusion documentaries and live musical theatre choreography. The bespoke facilities provide a blank canvas to fulfil your choreographic ambition, and support you to establish your creative identity.
