Students and Graduates appear in viral Better Man ‘Rock DJ’ Scene
One of the highlights of the new Robbie Williams biographical film “Better Man” is an ambitious dance sequence set to his iconic track”Rock DJ”, captured along London’s prestigious Regent Street in the West End. The scene, which director Michael Gracey orchestrated across four nights in 2023, incorporates around five hundred professional dancers performing alongside a computer-generated primate which represents Robbie himself. This unique creative choice stems from Gracey’s inspiration after learning that Williams had compared himself to a ‘performing chimp’ on stage in an interview.

The sequence features extensive choreography and edited to appear as one continuous shot, culminating in a massive crowd of real dancers, including over eighty-nine Performers College students – the majority of which were still studying at the time and were recruited through an in-college opportunity.
BA (Hons) Musical Theatre and Dance student Emily Bennett reflected on the role:
“Being a part of the film Better Man was such an amazing experience, especially getting the chance to film it whilst in my 3rd year. It almost didn’t feel real- dancing in the middle of regent street at 3am, and working with such huge creatives, I literally was pinching myself the whole shoot! I will always be so grateful to Performers for providing such incredible opportunities whilst still in training – what a way that was to start my career!”
Fellow student Amber Lole Millard added:
“Being a part of such a large production and experiencing what goes on behind the scenes of a movie set is an experience that will never be forgotten. I cherished the chance to get to know so many wonderful and gifted people. I will always be immensely appreciative of the chances Performers College gave me.”
Student George Harper also worked on the scene:
“Having the privilege to work on Better Man whilst still training at Performers College was incredible. I learned a lot on the shoot, on set you could see the intensity and standard required to work at such a level. I loved working on the movie set and seeing how everything came together to produce the rock DJ sequence. It’s an experience I won’t ever forget!”
